OSU study: Wildfires' impacts on climate overestimated
A recent study at Oregon State University indicates that some past approaches to calculating the impacts of forest fires have grossly overestimated the number of live trees that burn up and the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result.

Mixed reactions to measures' approval
When Oregon Democratic lawmakers adopted tax increases on high earners and corporations last year along largely party lines, they said they believed the taxes would pass a statewide referendum. Oregon voters on Jan. 26 confirmed that sentiment, approving Measure 66 and Measure 67 by comfortable margins. ... Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences Dean and Experiment Station Director Sonny Ramaswamy said he heaved a sigh of relief when he learned the measures passed.

OSU builds nuclear reactor test facility
Though Oregon hasn't had a working nuclear reactor since the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant began decommissioning in 1993, nuclear research is alive and well at Oregon State University.

Wes Lematta built a life that soared
He relentlessly promoted helicopters, still mostly a novelty. He made headlines plucking sailors off a sinking ship near Coos Bay, Ore., and for pulling two water skiers from Portland to Astoria. The real cash came from such gigs as hoisting trapeze artists, ferrying Santa Claus, showering ping pong balls on car lots.

Commentary: Oregon State gets it with football pricing
I doubt Oregon State athletic director Bob DeCarolis was reading me recently when I ranted about Arizona's insane idea to raise football ticket prices when it can't fill the stadium with a winning team because, gee, we need the money. Or maybe he did. Don't really care. I just like it when an athletic director has the sense to do the right thing.

Success of the nerd
Ryan Kirkpatrick's two businesses market to the young and the cool; he stages snowboarding events at college campuses across the western United States - on real snow. He also manufactures high-fashion sunglasses made from exotic woods. Corvallis residents might have heard of his "Snow in the Quad," events - a snowboarding exhibition that has been held each spring in the Memorial Union Quad at Oregon State University since 2006. But the 26-year-old insists he's more nerdy than trendy, despite the fact his two businesses, Galvanic Design and Shwood Shades, are marketed to the 18-to-34 consumer demographic.
