Beavers lead to legal flap for East Austin saloon
There's a beaver problem in East Austin. The Longbranch Inn, a bar with live music at 1133 East 11th St., has been told in a cease and desist letter that its beaver logo infringes on the Benny Beaver trademark used by Oregon State University. The letter "came in the mail here; at first I thought it was a joke," said Jim Stockbauer, who owns the bar with his business partner, Kevin Crutchfield.
Towering northwest forests stand out in global map
"The beauty of this is that it is global and wall-to-wall over all forests," said David Turner, professor of forest ecosystems and society at OSU. "That monitoring ability will be an essential tool in the process of developing a sustainable relationship between humanity and the biosphere."
Israel trip provides insight into conflict
When President Ed Ray traveled to Israel in early July with a group of other university presidents, he was excited to talk with people on both sides of the Israeli-Palestine conflict, and learn more about the current political situation as well as to see places Heidi only read about in history texts and the Bible.
What he wasn't prepared for was the emotional impact the trip would have on him, from the power of the landscape itself to the stories he heard from those who had lived immersed in the conflict. It also helped him ease the loss of a close personal friend.

Research VP embraces change
Building renovations have kept Rick Spinrad, Oregon State University’s new vice president for research, from dressing up his new office in Kerr Administration Building. But once the dust settles, the first thing he plans to hang on the wall is a gift from President Barack Obama. Spinrad received the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award, given to select senior government executives, two weeks before leaving Washington, D.C., for Corvallis earlier this summer. He received a similar award from President George W. Bush, and said the two awards prove how research is "longstanding and apolitical."
Oregonlive poll: Oregon State football all-decade team: Anderson, Canfield, Moore and Smith lead passing revolution in Corvallis
The past 10 years produced the greatest decade of college football this state has ever seen, with both the Beavers and Ducks reaching previously unattained heights of sustained excellence. The Beavers were 80-45 (.640) and 6-2 in bowl games while UO went 87-38 (.696) and 4-5 in bowl games. Each program produced more NFL players than ever before. As this football season approaches, we're rolling out all-decade teams for both programs.
How are items chosen for Beaver Eclips?
Beaver Eclips is a free service of the OSU Alumni Association. Its main purpose is to provide alumni and friends of OSU with a sense of how Oregon State has been portrayed in the news media over the past week. Items are selected by the staff of the Oregon Stater and by other OSUAA employees. Inclusion of an item in Eclips means only that we think it's interesting and/or important, and does not constitute an endorsement of its point of view or its journalistic accuracy.
